When Should a Sewer Line Be Repaired or Replaced?

The repair-or-replace decision comes down to what the camera shows, not the age of the house.

Repair or lining is usually appropriate when the pipe still holds its shape and the defect is localised: a cracked section, root intrusion at a joint, or a short damaged run in an otherwise sound line. Trenchless methods and CIPP lining can restore these with limited excavation.

Replacement generally becomes the sensible option when the pipe has collapsed, when there are significant bellies that lining cannot correct because the slope itself is wrong, when the material has deteriorated along most of its length, or when repeated failures have occurred at multiple points.

Access and depth affect the choice too. A deep line under a driveway makes trenchless methods far more attractive; a shallow line in open ground may be cheaper to excavate outright.

The one constant is that the decision should follow an inspection. Any recommendation about a sewer line made without seeing inside it is a guess.
