Early warning signs
- Water appearing in the basement floor drain when other fixtures are used
- Toilets bubbling or dropping in level for no reason
- Several drains slowing down over the same few weeks
- Sewer odour in the basement
- Gurgling from the laundry standpipe during a wash cycle
- Slow drainage that worsens noticeably during heavy rain
What causes sewer backups in Brampton homes
The most common cause is a blockage in the private sewer lateral: roots, grease, wipes, or debris collecting at a defect in the pipe. Older neighbourhoods with mature trees and clay pipe see this most often.
The second cause is capacity. During intense rainfall the municipal system can surcharge, and if a home has no backwater valve, that pressure can find its way into the lowest fixtures. Homes with weeping tile or downspouts connected to the sanitary system contribute additional volume during storms.
Collapsed or bellied pipe sections are a third cause — the line never fully clears, so every incident builds on the last.
What to do during a backup
- Stop using all water in the building immediately — no toilets, taps, laundry or dishwasher
- Keep people and pets away from the contaminated area
- Do not enter standing water near electrical outlets or panels
- Photograph the affected area before cleaning for insurance purposes
- Call for service so the blockage can be cleared before more waste water enters the home
Reducing the risk of it happening again
After the line is cleared, a camera inspection shows whether the cause was a removable blockage or a pipe defect that will keep causing problems. From there the options include sewer cleaning on a schedule, root cutting, spot repair, lining or replacement.
On the protection side, a backwater valve on the building drain and a properly sized, tested sump pump are the two most effective additions for a Brampton basement. Keeping wipes and grease out of the system removes the most common blockage material entirely.
