Sump pump problems we see

Installation and replacement

Correct sizing matters more than brand. We look at how much water the pit takes on, the vertical lift to the discharge point and the length of the run, then select a pump that can keep up without short-cycling itself to an early failure.

A proper install includes a solid check valve, sealed and supported discharge piping, a discharge point directed well away from the foundation, and a float that can move freely. Where a power outage would be serious, a battery backup pump is worth considering.

Backwater valves

A backwater valve installed on the building drain allows waste water to leave and closes if the municipal sewer surcharges, helping prevent sewage from pushing back into the lowest fixtures. It is one of the more effective protections for a finished basement in a flood-prone area.

Valves need occasional attention: the flap can be held open by debris, and the gate should be inspected and cleaned. We install new backwater valves and service or repair existing ones.

Simple seasonal checks

• Pour a bucket of water into the pit and confirm the pump starts, clears the pit and stops
• Check that the float moves freely and is not resting against the wall
• Clear the outdoor discharge outlet before winter and after storms
• Remove gravel and silt from the bottom of the pit
• Confirm the pump is plugged into a working, dedicated outlet
