Signs Your Main Drain May Be Clogged
A single slow sink is a local problem. A blocked main drain affects everything downstream of it, and the signs are distinctive once you know them.
Watch for multiple fixtures acting up at the same time. Listen for a toilet gurgling when the washing machine drains — air being pushed back through the trap. Look for water rising in a basement floor drain, which is usually the lowest opening in the system and the first place a backed-up main will surface.
Other clues include a toilet whose water level drops on its own, drains that got slower over the same few weeks, and sewer odour appearing in the basement.
If you see these signs, stop using water in the house. Every litre you send down a blocked line has nowhere to go and increases the chance of it coming back up through a fixture. Call for service rather than continuing to test it.
