Signs You May Have a Hidden Plumbing Leak
Hidden leaks do the most damage because nothing obvious happens for a long time. The clues are subtle but consistent.
A water bill that rose without a change in household use is one of the clearest. So is the sound of running water when every fixture is off — worth listening for late at night in a quiet house.
Look for damp or discoloured drywall, paint that bubbles, ceiling stains that return after painting, a musty smell in a closet or under a vanity, warped flooring, warm spots on a floor over a hot water line, or mould that keeps reappearing in the same corner.
One check anyone can do: turn off every fixture and appliance that uses water, then watch the water meter. If it is still moving, water is going somewhere.
Early detection matters because water damage costs escalate with time. A leak caught at the pipe is a pipe repair; the same leak six months later can involve framing, insulation, flooring and remediation.
