Common Causes of Low Water Pressure

Diagnosing low water pressure starts with one question: is it one fixture or the whole house?

At a single fixture, the usual culprits are a scaled aerator or showerhead, a partially closed shut-off valve, a clogged supply line or a failing cartridge inside the faucet. Unscrewing and cleaning the aerator solves a surprising share of these.

Throughout the house, the causes are bigger: a partly closed main shut-off, a failing pressure regulator, mineral scale narrowing older galvanised pipe, a leak somewhere in the service line, or a supply issue outside the property.

Pay attention to timing too. Pressure that drops only when another fixture runs suggests undersized or restricted piping. Pressure that dropped suddenly and stayed low deserves prompt attention, since a hidden leak can present exactly that way.
